Mohammad Reza Mobasheri, the founder of Mobasheri Carpets, was born in 1948 to an art-loving family in the land of Isfahan. During his late high school years, he began his apprenticeship and internship in the Tehran market under Mr. Shahverdi, a reputable merchant of the bazaar. This experience of market presence continued until the end of his military service, leading Mobasheri to develop an inclination towards carpet trading. Therefore, after completing his military service, in the late 1960s, in the Tehran market, he gained experience working with reputable hand-woven carpet merchants, including Mr. Mohammad Ali Azimi. During this time, through spending considerable time in the working environment, he became well acquainted with the fundamental principles of carpets, including the patterns of Iranian carpets.
Mohammad Reza Mobasheri, with his love for his business, dedicated all his time and energy to learning and gaining knowledge and experience in the art-industry of carpets. Soon, as a trustworthy and active young man, he gained recognition among merchants.
Honesty, perseverance, and focus on work were other characteristics that led him to be invited to work by Mr. Mohammad Irani, a reputable and pious merchant, in 1970. During Mobasheri’s presence with this renowned merchant, he not only learned the principles of trade but also became familiar with the intricate technical aspects of the carpet industry.
“Integrity and honesty” as Mobasheri’s main capital transformed him into a trusted member of Mr. Mohammad Irani’s family, and shortly after, in 1971, he became the son-in-law of this great merchant.
Establishment of Mobasheri’s Trading House
In the following years, Mobasheri decided to gradually continue his professional activities independently. To this end, in 1976, he launched his first store in the Parsa shopping center in Tehran Bazaar, focusing on antique and vintage carpets. Although old carpet purchases were not desirable for Iranian customers, tourists, and foreign buyers were very interested in these products.
Mobasheri, the Pioneering Exporter
After the Iranian Revolution in 1978, Mobasheri, who had become an experienced merchant, seized opportunities for carpet exports to other countries, including United States of America, and from 1980 to 1991, he worked as one of the leading traders in carpet exports. The ups and downs of carpet exports to Western countries and changes in working conditions prompted Mobasheri to think of a new direction for his business.
Mobasheri; The Surgeon of Carpets
In 1993, when Alireza Mobasheri, the son of Mohammad Reza Mobasheri, joined him in the business, they blended a combination of experience and youthful ideas and embarked on a new venture in the Tehran market. They significantly reduced the strategy of direct export to destination countries and instead focused on providing carpets with attractive and requested patterns to foreign buyers. In this business model, they identified and purchased artistic and antique carpets from all over the country and then proceeded to repair, wash, and revive those carpets. The restoration of these carpets was a delicate and highly accurate process. The high quality of carpet restoration at the Mobasheri collection gradually caught the attention of colleagues, traders, and foreign consumers. To the extent that old and reputable merchants referred to Mobasheri as the “carpet surgeon.”
The offering of unique carpets, meticulously restored, in the Mobasheri collection led traders to visit the Parsa market for purchase and export to various parts of the world. This strategic decision and commitment to high quality proved to be very effective and became a turning point in the Mobasheri business. To meet the high demand, there was a need to increase working capacity. To this end, several shops and warehouses were purchased adjacent to the first store and added to the Mobasheri Trading House workspace.
Entry into the Carpet Production Arena
From 1996 onwards, in response to another part of the market demand, which was the recreation of handwoven carpets with authentic and unique designs, this became part of the Mobasheri group’s agenda. To this end, Mobasheri Carpets began producing rural and tribal carpets with eye-catching designs in selected regions across the country, which continues to this day.
Mobasheri; Accessible to Admirers of Authentic Iranian Art
In 2003, after conducting surveys of Iranian customers and appropriately meeting the needs of final consumers of fine hand-woven carpets, it was decided to launch the Mobasheri Carpets gallery in the Bagh Ferdows neighborhood of Tehran. This exhibition space, with two floors and an area of over 500 square meters and dedicated parking for customers, started its activities in 2003, with a focus on introducing and offering, tribal, rural, and urban fine carpets. In the continuation of the Mobasheri family business path, to increase working capacity and expand activities, other children of Mr. Mohammad Reza Mobasheri; Mr. Hamid Reza Mobasheri, Mr. Amir Reza Mobasheri, and Mrs. Setareh Mobasheri also joined this family business. Mobasheri Carpets continues a mission that began over 50 years ago with enthusiasm and dedication to this valuable Iranian art, committed to preserving and narrating the stories of Iranian carpets.
